This imagery thus foreshadows the revelation that Nathalie is plotting to marry the good-natured but unattractive and rather foolish Brantain while maintaining an affair with Mr. Brantain's character is reminiscent of several other men in Kate Chopin's stories, such as Brently Mallard in "The Story of an Hour" and Gaston Baroda in "A Respectable Woman," in that Brantain is portrayed as a well-meaning and not dislikable man who loves his eventual wife but who fails to be desirable to her, kate chopin essay.

Yet, we tend to feel little or no sympathy for the man because Chopin tells the story through the eyes of the female protagonist, who has her own aims. Unlike most of the heroines of Chopin's stories, Nathalie does not face any emotional trials or true mental conflict.

Instead, she acts as a woman who has already realized her potential and ability to satisfy her desires and who now tries to adjust the actions of those around her in order to suit her wishes. In a way, Nathalie takes the hidden motivations of Chopin's protagonists and takes them to an unpalatable extreme, since Nathalie here is portrayed as having a calculating, imperious nature. Even so, The rights that women enjoy today were not always as equal to that of males, kate chopin essay.

The women's rights movement transitioned America's views of them from the way they were pre-nineteenth century to now. Novelist Kate Chopin's literary works was a crux that aided in the strength of the movement, kate chopin essay. Women faced many hardships, and Kate Chopinkate chopin essay, a literary genius, contributed to a lot to the movement. To begin, in the nineteenth century people married at a very young age and women did not work in that time. They were denied kate chopin essay outside of seamstresses and mid-wives; therefore they couldn't always realistically support themselves.

Women had to get married so that someone could support them. Women were also not their own person; they were the property of their husbands and it was expected for them to get married and have babies. This story's setting is not really that important. We assume that it takes place in Chopin's native state Louisiana. Most of the story takes place at Mrs. Mallard's home over the course of an hour. A good portion of the story takes place in her room sitting in her armchair in front of the window.

The theme I derived is that Chopin was trying to say that if your are made free but than you have to go back to being regulated than that is worth dying for.

First, Chopin uses two flat characters and one round character to show the irony of being free than back to being regulated. In the first opening lines all of the characters are introduced. Mallard, the protagonist and the story's only round character, will undergo significant change as the story continues. Readers learn two essential facts about her that add immediate tension and interest: she has heart trouble, and her husband is assumed dead.

The other three characters introduced, Mr. Mallard, Josephine and Richards, are flat characters. Mallard, though described in more detail later in the story by his wife, does not change in the story and never achieves complexity or depth as a character, kate chopin essay. Josephine and Richards are minor characters who act out their social roles predictably to make the plot progress.

Women are meant to uphold a certain expectation that has been held over them for centuries. But in the nineteenth century things for women began to change. While many women fulfilled their "responsibilities", a large number of women responded to this attempt to define and limit their roles with literature and work in the feminist movement.

Most of this change came about because of the actions women took upon themselves and their desire to break out of the limits imposed on their sex, because of the specific roles women are expected to pursue, kate chopin essay. They have been unjustly held back from achieving full equality for much of the human history. Chopin was neither an activist nor an kate chopin essay for the roles of women. She was nonetheless a woman who took women extremely seriously.

She never doubted women's ability to be strong because she came from a long line of strong women whom she loved and respected; her great-grandmother, kate chopin essay, grandmother, and mother affiliation, kate chopin essay. She had a lack of interest in feminism, she had a different understanding of freedom for women.
