In Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, main character Max Kane, meets a boy named Kevin Freak who has Morquio Syndrome. Max and Freak develop a good friendship after Max and Freak go and see the Fourth of July fireworks. Both kids are in eighth grade. Max lives with his Gran and Gram because his dad Killer Kane is in jail for killing Max's mom. In both the book and the film Max reaches down without thinking and picks Freak on his shoulders so that he can see. This is stating that Freak had died in the hospital in the ICU. However in the film, on christmas the night that they had had the party Freak had died in his sleep at home. The director made this change so that the movie had a little more action but was still sentimental. Since Freak died at home it gave the movie more action because Max had run out and started to chase the ambulance later leading him to running to the medical research building that had turned out to be a pillow making factory.
